This Bodysurf Scotland event features dancers Karl Jay-Lewin and Anushiye Yarnell with choreography by Deborah Hay – a leading experimental dance icon whose uncompromising approach continues to drive dance forward. Two mindfully embodied dancers perform adaptations of Hay’s wonderful score I Think Not.
Karl Jay-Lewin “…has moved audiences to tears, laughter and exasperation in equal measure.”
Anushiye Yarnell “Somehow the next unrecognizable moment unfolds the same as the last” WHOLLY HOLEY HOLY.
We Think Not will evoke a sense of simple humanity and has been described as defying interpretation and mischievous. There will be two performances: Sat 28th July 7.30pm and Sun 29th July 1.30pm

Aberdeen International Youth Festival

Wednesday 1st Aug, 7:30 pm

In our umpteenth year of being a venue for this great festival, we are delighted to host a young and fantastic world youth group. For the Manama Youth Folk Band song holds a prominent place in their traditions and customs. Hailing from Bahrain, they seek to revive the traditions of folk music in the hearts of young people and to promote the traditions to as broad an audience as possible. Our prospective second troupe Kasaah from Ghana have experienced visa problems (an increasing issue with performers coming over from Africa) and will not now be coming. The show will go on with the Manama Youth Folk Band only, and we will now reduce the ticket price to £5 for all, and offer a partial refund to ticket holders who paid the full price unless they do not want to take up the option of attending in which case we’ll refund them fully. Under 11′s now come free.

Tickets not now available online.
Tickets at this new price will be sold on the door on the night only. Details on our posters and in our Good Gig Guide are outdated and this is the latest.

Angus: Weaver of Grass

Saturday 4th Aug, 2:00 pm

Presented by the magical Horse and Bamboo Theatre Company, Angus MacPhee’s life is seen as a tale of illness, lost traditions and magical hats made of grass “stunning like sunbursts”. Raised on South Uist, and severely affected by WWII Angus spent 50 years in a psychiatric hospital. He did not speak; instead he wove remarkable costumes out of grass. By using the sounds, songs and images of the Outer Hebrides, plus masks and puppetry, film and animation, Horse and Bamboo make exciting theatre. Angus features Gaelic singer Mairi Morrison and grass replicas by Joanne B Kaar. Suitable for all ages except perhaps very little children.

“Physical, emotional and aural beauty… their collective artistry is awesome” The Stage

Kakatsitsi

Friday 10th Aug, 8:00 pm

Kakatsitsi are a group of traditional drummers, dancers and singers from the Ga tribe of Southern Ghana, with their roots in the fishing community of Jamestown. Their music takes traditional rhythms and chants from their own Ga tradition and those of a variety of other West African cultures, rearranging them in a modern and accessible way. Kakatsitsi’s music combines traditional drumming grooves played on a wide variety of West African drums with melodies from bamboo flutes, xylophone and traditional chants sung in six part harmony.

Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham

Sunday 26th Aug, 7:30 pm

In 1988, two members from two of Scotland’s leading bands, “The Boys of The Lough” and “Silly Wizard”, came together to work on a television series. You could say “the rest is history”. Phil Cunningham is widely regarded as one of the most exciting and innovative accordion players of the times; Aly Bain is Scotland’s supreme traditional-style fiddler. Together they create sublime, inspired music. 24 years on, both now an MBE, they are filling not only small village halls, but in all of our major performance venues. In 2005 they were awarded Best Duo in the annual BBC Folk Awards. And of course we are delighted to welcome them back to the Universal Hall. Book early their last show here sold out promptly.
“They are probably the best traditional musicians you are ever likely to hear” Mike Russell
